Why We Teach Practical Skills

May 2025

Exam results matter at YAEC, but they aren't the only thing that shapes a child's future. Many of our pupils come from families where finishing secondary school is far from certain, let alone university. So practical skills are part of the timetable, right next to maths and English.

Our pupils learn tailoring, poultry keeping, piggery and bricklaying, and more recently making liquid soap and reusable sanitary pads. We chose skills people use every day in our village, things a young person can earn from whether or not they stay in school.

Bricklaying means a little more to us than most. It's the same work that goes into putting up our own classrooms as the school grows.

We'd like to offer more of this training. If you'd like to help, visit our donate page.
