Our Girls Are Learning to Make Reusable Sanitary Pads

August 2026

Pads cost money that many families here don't have, and for some girls that means staying home during their period. At YAEC our girls are learning to make their own.

We asked one of our pupils to show us what she has learned. Turn the sound on to hear her explain it.

She lays the finished pads out on the table and picks one up. There's a plastic layer inside, she tells us, so it doesn't leak. She shows how it folds and fastens, and explains that after use it's washed and dried so it can be worn again.

A girl who can make her own pads doesn't have to find money for them every month, and she can teach her sisters and friends at home.

It's one of several practical skills our pupils learn, along with making liquid soap, tailoring, farming and bricklaying. It also ties in with our aim of teaching children about health and family life. See our programs page for more.
